Timber flooring guide by Hurford

Timber flooring never goes out of style, this natural product is the preferred flooring solution for most home builders and renovators as the natural product adds softness and warmth to any space. The high demand for timber flooring has led to innovations that allow the supply and installation of timber flooring more accessible and options include solid timber flooring, overlay board, and engineered flooring. These products are available in a variety of species, stains, and finishes which means that achieving the look that your client is after will be possible.

Whilst there are many products to choose from, it is important to understand that each timber flooring option may be suited for different applications or outcomes, so we have worked with our friends at Hurford to give you an outline of these options, which will help you find the most practical solution for your client.

Solid timber flooring

Solid timber flooring is a structural product and is a definite favourite among our customers. Being a solid timber product means that the floor will be durable and reliable. This product is the only option available when installing over bearers and joists or battens. This is also one of the most expensive flooring solution, sometimes with longer delays, and it must be sanded and polished after installation.

Installation guidelines:

  • Structural product that can be installed directly to joists or battens
  • Only the 80mm can be secret fixed, the wider board must be top-fixed (as per Australian standards)
  • Must be sanded and polished after installation

Lengths available: Random lengths up to 5.7m

Hurford Fourteen – Wide board overlay

The Hurford Fourteen is a wide board overlay product that is manufactured to be laid over solid subfloors (e.g. particle board flooring, plywood, or existing floorboards). This wide board is warranted for secret fix application unlike the solid timber flooring, which will not allow for secret nail fixing for the wider board options. Hurford’s manufacturing process ensures that their FOURTEEN are straight line edged and matched for faster installation. As a wide board overlay, this timber product has the same usable wear layer as a 19mm solid timber product, which means that it is more cost-effective than a solid timber product.

Installation guidelines:

  • Must be installed over solid subfloor or existing flooring
  • Can be secret nailed
  • Must be sanded and polished after installation

Lengths available: Random lengths up to 4.5m

Hurford engineered flooring

The Hurford engineered flooring range is a cost-effective solution for timber flooring. This product range has the fastest installation method and doesn’t require sanding or polishing after installation, which means that you save time and money on-site. The engineered flooring can be floated, laid over a solid subfloor or existing flooring. These products are delivered with factory coating, which means that your client knows the finish of the timber/stain prior to the installation of the product. Another great advantage of the engineered flooring offer is that it is ideal for areas where the moisture content could change dramatically or in areas with excessive UV exposure, due to the timber content on the finished product being less than a solid timber product, and therefore, less prone to movement and warping.

Installation guidelines:

  • Must be installed over solid subfloor or existing flooring
  • No sanding or polishing required after installation

Lengths available: 1.9m and 2.4m
