Essential tips for handling and storing composite products

Composite materials come prefinished, which means they can't be sanded or repaired like traditional timber. If damaged, they will need to be replaced. To avoid this, it's crucial to handle them with care.

At NHS, we take extra precautions by marking all composite products as FRAGILE before sending them to your site. However, the responsibility for protecting these materials continues once they arrive.

We've compiled some essential tips to help you store, handle, and maintain composite products on site and during construction to ensure they remain in top condition throughout the project and beyond.

What to Do:

  1. Follow Guidelines: Stick to the Installation and Care & Maintenance Guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
  2. Store Properly: Keep composite products on a clean, flat, and dry surface. Avoid uneven ground like dirt or grass to prevent warping.
  3. Protect from Damage: Keep products safe from construction debris and avoid any contact that could scratch or chip them.
  4. Handle with Care: When transporting, make sure the side that will be visible in the finished project isn’t facing down. Store products away from heavy equipment to prevent accidental damage.
  5. Keep Wrapping On: Don’t remove any protective wrapping until you're ready to install the products.
  6. Cut off Deck: Avoid cutting products directly on the deck surface. Cut away from the deck and clean any construction dust or debris immediately.
  7. Move Gently: When moving products, handle them carefully to avoid damage from friction between boards.
  8. Cover During Work: Protect the deck from dust and debris during construction. Ideally, install the deck after other work is completed.

For your client:

  1. Prevent Uneven Fading: Avoid placing items like mats or plants on the deck to prevent uneven fading from sun exposure.
  2. Avoid Plant Contact: Don’t place pot plants directly on the deck to prevent discolouration and mildew. Keep the deck clean and dry.
  3. Clean Correctly: Follow the manufacturers guidelines and only use their recommending product of choice when cleaning.

By adhering to these guidelines, you can ensure that composite products remain in excellent condition, providing lasting performance and aesthetic appeal.
