Celebrating milestones with the NHS family

The NHS family gathers twice a year to recognise our achievements and have a chance to catch up with teams from different stores.

At our End of Year party this year, we celebrated our team members and recognised our NHS family who have been loyal for many years. We sat down with our 15 and 25-year team members to talk about their time with NHS and why they love being part of the NHS family.

15 Years

Amanda Beresford

Amanda has two start dates with NHS, first in 2005 and then again in 2008. She started at the Lambton Plasterboard counter and then progressed her career to include roles as the Lambton Freight Manager, Express Ute Manager, Plasterboard Team Leader, HR & Training Manager and today, you’ll see her lovely and cheerful face at Lambton as the Lambton Branch Manager.

During her time at NHS she has seen things change from a small team at Lambton to the opening of additional stores and the expansion of the NHS family. She played a key role in placing team members during her time as our HR Manager, so she made sure to add members who are a good fit to our family culture. According to Amanda, “we have grown so much and still managed to keep a small business feel where we know each of our employees well, but we also have great relationships with our customers still.”

Amanda loves coming to work every day because of the people. “Some of the people I see every day, customers and team mates I have known for so many years, and I truly value those relationships and feel very fortunate to work somewhere that people want to work but also somewhere that customers keep coming back to for many years…we are a genuine family, it sounds cliché, but I really do see my team as family and I really am so proud of all of them and love to see how they grow and progress being part of the business.”

Christine French

Technically, Christine has been part of the NHS family for 17 years – she started as a trainee hire through the Master Builder’s Association in 2007 after she completed her business certificate and was offered to stay on as a permanent part of the team.

When she started NHS as our receptionist we had one location in Lambton with a fleet of four delivery trucks. Today, she performs her duties as the Purchasing Officer for Cardiff. She says that “it was a sort of wow moment then to me as to how big NHS has gotten over the years, the volume of stock kept as well as range of suppliers on offer.”

For Christine, “although it has grown a lot bigger over the years it is still very much a family environment. You never feel like just another number.” Working with the same colleagues as she did when she first stepped foot at NHS who she now considers her close friends is what she looks forward to the most when she comes to work.

25 Years

Jim McMurtie

Many of you would know Jim. He joined the NHS family on the 15th January 1998 as the Sales Manager for the then newly formed Fastener Division. Today, Jim is an Account Manager who attends to the needs of a number of our customers. Jim says “over the past 60 years, I’ve worked for National, International and local companies and whilst they offered great challenges they didn’t offer as much satisfaction as I’ve enjoyed over the last 25 years (at NHS)”.

Jim has seen NHS grow from having 500 customers to over 8,000. The team has changed from catering to the needs of the plasterers to becoming a major player in the building and construction industry in Newcastle. He believes that NHS, at its core, “is a “Family Company” because they look on their employees as family”.

Jack Broderick

Jack started at NHS on 10 August 1998 making up plasterboard loads at Lambton, which he affectionately calls “The Little Store”. When he first started as employee #7 of NHS, Lambton was the size of a 6-7 car garage and he feels extremely grateful to be part of the growth to the three stores, “it’s a pleasure to be part of a growing local company” says Jack.

Jack is now in charge of Goods Inwards at Cardiff and is grateful for the NHS family as he feels like he is fully trusted in his role.

“Our first two Christmas parties were at the Crockett’s home, it was a very personal and intimate affair.”
