Build It Your Way: NHS Has the Perfect Post for Every Outdoor Project

Whether you’re crafting a serene backyard escape, building a bold architectural feature, or simply refreshing a tired deck, the right timber post can make all the difference. At NHS, there’s no shortage of choice. From durable hardwoods to sleek, modern composite options, NHS offers a diverse timber post range, including larger formats in-store, with sizes up to 185mm x 185mm.

Take a look at what’s on offer.

Primed H3 Treated Pine Posts – Ready for Paint, Built for Outdoors

For those who like the clean look of painted posts, the primed H3 treated pine is a standout. These posts are pre-treated to resist rot, termites, and fungi, and come with a pre-applied primer — making them ready to paint straight out of the yard.

Just a heads-up: to maintain warranty and longevity, it’s important to stick to lighter colours (check the LRV – Light Reflectance Value – before choosing your paint).

These posts aren’t just practical; they’re versatile. Available in sizes up to 185x185mm, they’re ideal for making a visual statement or supporting substantial structures.

QLD Spotted Gum GL18 – Naturally Tough, Beautifully Australian

Looking for something with a distinctly Aussie edge? Queensland Spotted Gum GL18 posts bring native durability with a stylish finish. These posts are ACQ H3 treated for added resilience, and the resorcinol glue lamination ensures long-term performance, even in harsh outdoor conditions.

Spotted gum’s natural grain and pre-oiled finish pair beautifully with matching decking, creating a cohesive, high-end outdoor look. Available in sizes up to 135x135mm, these posts are a great choice for durability and design.

H4 Treated Pine – Solid Strength from Nature

If you prefer the authenticity and unbroken grain of solid timber, H4 treated pine posts might be your pick. Made from Kaituna, a premium New Zealand pine, these F7 graded posts boast a naturally strong structure with no visible joins — perfect for staining or painting.

Available in 90x90mm sizing and finished with a premium DAR (Dressed All Round) surface in our smaller lengths, or in a RH (Rougher Headed) surface in our longer lengths- these look sharp from the get go. The protective wrap keeps warping in check and protects the post until  installation is complete. Just remember to re-seal any cuts or holes with a suitable timber preservative to maintain their treatment integrity and follow basic safety precautions when working with treated pine.

Merbau – Rich Colour, Rich Character

Merbau, also known as Kwila, is a hardwood with deep reddish-brown tones and high durability. A favourite for decking and screening, NHS offers both finger jointed glue laminated, and finger jointed solid face merbau posts in several sizes — from a   90x90mm right up to 190x190mm.

These posts offer both structural integrity and visual warmth. Merbau is termite and decay resistant, with a lifespan of 25–50 years when properly maintained. Just keep in mind: tannin bleed can occur, so always follow paint and finish instructions to manage this natural trait.

Looking for a Composite Alternative? Try Lifespan Composite Beams

For the design-forward builder, Lifespan hybrid aluminium composite beams bring a whole new dimension to your project.  These architectural posts combine the strength of an aluminium core with the aesthetics of timber — minus the maintenance.

Available in three natural shades with a grooved matte finish, Lifespan beams are ideal for pergolas, entryways, and dramatic outdoor statements. Their UV resistance, low-maintenance bamboo composite shell, and increased span capabilities make them a smart solution for high-impact, low-fuss installations.
