Solicore vs Solid Blockboard Core Doors

Solicore vs Solid Blockboard Core Doors

When choosing doors

When you recommend doors to your customers it is important to know the different factors that play into choosing the right door for the space. Our friends at Hume have highlighted important additional considerations that influence the overall performance of the door.

Here are the key points to think about when choosing the right door for your build*

Internal

External

Location

Space availability: hinged vs a cavity unit.

Are you replacing an existing door or will you require a door jamb as well.

Sufficient overhead protection

Replacing an existing door, will you require a door jamb? If it is an existing jamb you will need to check the rebate and order the door to suit

Is the door in a BAL area and what is the Light Reflective Value (LRV) required?

Configuration

Single doors, double doors, bi-fold, multi-fold, smartrobe, barn door, cavity unit

Single doors, double doors, doors with sidelites, doors with hinged entry frames, pivot door systems

Construction

Acoustics/sound (I.e. solid door or a block door for a media room)

Not all entrance doors are solid construction so you should consider strength, durability, weight, climate, required surface, security

Extras

Rebating (pair of doors) and grooved bottom rails (sliding)

If considering a Hume standard entry frame, perhaps consider including a weatherguard frame, which will come with a safe draining aluminum seal for improved moisture control. In BAL applicaitons the weathergaurd is a standard inclusion.

Not all doors are made the same

To help you further decipher doors, we will focus on the construction types of two specific products: the Solicore Particleboard Core (SCX1) and the Solid Blockboard Core (STPC). There’s some confusion between these two very similar products, so we want to help you determine the best one for the space and function.

Some benefits of these two products include:

  • Being a solid door, these products will help reduce sound transfer between rooms. They provide additional security, due to the material and construction method used.
  • These products can be used for external applications,** when installed with sufficient overhead protection.

With so many similarities between the two door products, an important consideration is the paint finish. STPC is not recommended for semi or high gloss paints due to core show-through, for this type of finish, it is recommended that the SCX1 door alternative is installed.

If you have a application without sufficient overhang and exposed to the weather, you could consider an Aluminium Door.
