Choosing the Correct Decking Screw for a Lasting Installation

The decking and screened areas in most homes today have transformed into an extension of the indoor leisure and entertaining areas, so most of your clients will be looking for ways to connect their internal living space to the outdoors.

To serve the growing popularity of the modern outdoor living space, our screw suppliers have developed innovations which will make the process quicker and easier, improve performance as well as helping you achieve a good-looking job. This is achieved through innovation around point design to allow predrill, metal selection, along with shank, kerf and head design this combined with multiple head designs and in a range of colour finishes there no shortage of choice both off the shelf and special order.

Decking screws for every joist and decking

Whether you’re installing timber decking on steel joists or timber joists there will be a decking screw that can help speed up the process without always needing to predrill and countersink, running the risk of decking screws to snap or timber to split and creating unsightly burring around the countersunk screw.

There are a two rules of thumb when selecting the right screw for the job length is 1/3 of the screw in the board and 2/3 in the joist, and as soon as the boards are any wider than 90mm the screw should be either 12G or a 14G. For example:

  • 3 x 19mm is 57mm although a 10G x 50 mm screw is widely accepted on a 90x19mm decking board
  • 90 x 22 a 10G x 65mm is appropriate
  • 19 x 140 – 12G x 60-65mm
  • 22 x 140 – 12/14 x 65mm

We have outlined the option below by joist and decking type as well as width and thickness.
