Product Description

Merbau, otherwise known as kwila, is a popular timber choice for decking and outdoor furniture. It’s an Asian rainforest hardwood with an abundance of natural oil, making it ideal for outdoor applications.

As with most natural timber products, colour variation within the merbau timber species is normal and one of its most appealing characteristics. Typically a dark reddish-brown in colour, occasionally a yellowish-brown, merbau decking has a noticeable grain appearance and is sure to enhance any outdoor living area.

When cut, it will deepen from a pale to dark reddish brown, contrasting with the sapwood. The wood grain is variable but usually interlocked or wavy. The timber has a coarse but even texture. It has a characteristic oily odour when cut. Merbau is also known for releasing tannins when it comes into contact with moisture (often referred to as bleeding).

Renowned for high strength and remarkable durability, the average life expectancy of merbau decking with proper above-ground installation and regular maintenance is 25-50 years.

Classed as a fire retardant species, merbau is naturally resistant to termite attack and decay.
